The Pirate Jamboree (review #2), written by Mark Teague, reviewed by Klaudia Janek

Student Reviewer: Manath M.
Summary: The plot follows Blackbeard Johnson and his two brothers, Bluebeard and Beigbeard, Eye Patch Sue, Cap’n Gunderboom, Peg Leg Jones, and more through a day-long adventure. The book describes the three brothers as scoundrels and the float through the day interacting with Sharktooth Jane, a clever outlaw. Then they meet Cap’n Gunderboom, a pirate with cannons covering his ship and Eye Patch Sure with a cursing parrot. The plot then lets them meet Peg Leg Jones, who is hosting the party for the other six pirates. The pirates playfully and clumsily arrive onto Peg Leg Jones’ ship. They suddenly meet the villain of the story, Jones’ mother, Mrs Jones, who rides the ship, S.S. Clean Your Room!

Straight Talk for Librarians: The villain of the book is mostly centred around the mother of Peg Leg Jones, the young pirate who is hosting the party. She wants him to clean his room. Not only does this story follow both fun and energetic plot and influence young readers to follow directions given to them by parents, but the illustrations are also quite intriguing. Across all genders, young and beginning readers are usually drawn to interesting covers. This storybook definitely includes a great illustration. What appears to be acrylic paint strokes leave a quite fun and playful tone upon the whole book. The illustrator uses vibrant and bold colours: strong reds, yellows, oranges, and blues. In the rich and warm tints, they are used as these colours are attention-grabbing and give off happy and optimistic energy and feeling.
