Little Wing Learns to Fly, written by Calista Brill, reviewed by Klaudia Janek

Summary: A young dragon child named Little Wing has been struggling to fly, and tries again, and again, and again to no avail. Little Wing practices every day in hopes of getting up into the air, but every day Little Wing flops back down to the ground. However, with the help of her mother and a determined mindset, Little Wing flutters up into the sky. Before her mom can tell her the rules of flying, a gust of wind blows by and Little Wing ends up high in the sky and far away from home. In new, unfamiliar territory, it will take bravery, courage, and determination for Little Wing to find her way back home and back to her mother.

Straight Talk for Librarians: This book captivates younger audiences with enthusiastic characters and detailed illustrations. The perspective of a dragon family generates more interest in the story and a unique lens in which children can relate their own experiences to. Every page is fully illustrated with gentle brushstrokes and advanced colored pencil techniques, and the utilization of cool colors brings a calming sense to those who view the pictures. The story teaches important lessons of never giving up, and inspires those who read it to keep trying at their goals, even if there are obstacles along the way. There is also a heartwarming message about family and the lengths family members will go to in order to help others. Overall, this is a very good story for children to learn about important life skills, such as determination and helping others.
