Way to Glow! Amazing Creatures that Light up in the Dark, written by Lisa Regan, reviewed by Klaudia Janek

Student Reviewer: Gabriel G.
Summary: Way to Glow! Amazing Creatures That Light Up in the Dark is a non-fiction book written by Lisa Regan, and includes photographs produced by Red Bird Publishing Ltd, U.K. Every two pages contain a photograph and information on a species of animal that glows in the dark, many of these animals being aquatic. There are a total of twenty-three different animals in this book, each with their own dedicated photograph and sentences of information regarding the animal. This book can be useful with parents and schools, because the information about the animals is accurate and educational, and there is also a lot of fun facts and photographs that children will find entertaining. Each page contains brief yet useful information about the animals size, appearance, methods of survival, and other various fun facts.

Straight Talk for Librarians: What makes this book special is not only does it show how an animal glows in the dark, but it also details why the animal does glow in the dark, explaining the survival reasons for said animal to glow. The only downside to the information in this book is that it is limited, only giving a few brief sentences for each animal ( I want more!). However, if a child sees an animal they are interested in from reading this book, they can then do further research online or elsewhere. One area this book excels in is in the visuals. Not only does each page feature a large, high quality photograph, but many of the photographs also feature embossed areas that one could feel, and many photos also actually glow in the dark. These embossed photographs can help kinesthetic learners better appreciate the book, and the glow in the dark visuals will make children more interested in the animals, as the pages glow in the dark in a similar way to the animals being described. Overall, Way to Glow! By Lisa Regan is a book that includes captivating visuals that children will find engaging, and also contains educational information that will get children more excited to learn.
