Student Reviewer: Nandini A.
Summary: The book “Here and Now” illustrated by E.B. Goodale and written by Julia Denos is a picture book about being present in the moment. It is consistently acknowledging the reader throughout the book, starting by addressing the reader’s presence in the beginning. It goes to describe a variety of events, both those that could be related to the reader as well as those that are not. The events described progress away from the reader, illustrating the larger scheme of events happening in the world and in the universe, however in a way that leaves the reader feeling connected with their surroundings and peace with the world around them. The illustrations present in the book perfect compliment the message and are beautifully done.

As a result, if a reader or early reader is experiencing emotional distress or needs a break, this book serves as a great point to reconnect with oneself and who they are in their present situation. The contents of the book would further help with the transition from the immediate moment to the grand scheme of life back to the reader’s personal life. It would be very useful overall to help emotional management of the readers. The illustrations are gorgeous, they act as the final push that helps to achieve the purpose of the book. The book is great for helping early readers connect with and manage their emotions. The book also contains diversity with the characters, making it a more effective read for classrooms.
