Here and Now (review #2), written by Julia Denos, reviewed by Klaudia Janek

Student Reviewer: Meera K.
Summary: The book “Here and Now” is a meditational picture book that causes young readers to realize that the world around them is alive. The calming, vivid artwork meshes with the message beautifully, which encourages young readers to fully appreciate the miracles of the universe. The book is a must-read experience for children, who live enveloped by technology, not realizing that the world around them exists. Children need awareness of the world, and now more than ever, this book is needed with the rise of technology use for children under 5.

Straight Talk for Librarians: The book doesn’t contain a plot, but can be considered informative non-fiction (which calms the reader). The book should be read at a quiet, calm spot during the day. The gentle colors and illustrations surrounded by brushed ink outlines (with the occasional interspersed acrylic painting) are unlike illustrations in most picture books, as they don’t focus on one main subject, but create a calming, beautiful atmosphere to bring awareness of the earth spinning, strangers having dinner and ideas blooming. Parents should read this to their children before bed, or at a quiet or meditative time. This is a perfect book to read before or after naptime. The vocabulary is simple, but the concept is complex, and many adults live their lives without thinking about the harmonious existence of the entire universe outside of themselves. This book changes that. A great purchase for any library.
