Darkstalker: Wings of Fire Legends, written by Tui T. Sutherland, reviewed by Amanda Davies

Summary:  Darkstalker. Clearsight. Fathom. Three dragons whose lives are irreversibly intertwined. Both Darkstalker and Fathom exhibit animus power--the power to wield magic. But while Fathom has seen the danger of this power, Darkstalker believes that he can use it safely and effectively. Clearsight, a seer, can work out the impact of each of their decisions in a thousand different futures, only some of which are happy. As the three dragons grow up, test their limits, and navigate the dangers around them, they learn how much they can trust themselves and each other.

Straight Talk for Librarians:  This prequel to the Wings of Fire series helps explain the origins of characters and artifacts important in the rest of the series, which takes place 2,000 years after the events of this book. Like the rest of the series, this book is filled with moral dilemnas, action, adventure, battles, and issues of loyalty. While Darkstalker and Clearsight's relationship as "soulmates" feels underdeveloped, the tension and action keep the story moving along nicely. Fans of the Wings of Fire series will be excited to read about Darkstalker's origins and indicators that, at least at the beginning, he wasn't all bad.
