Straight Talk for Librarians: This story is engaging and fun, similar to the Graceling series but lighter in tone. Reading the prior books in the series, while not required, would help support the world-building and background. The perspective alternates with each chapter, offering a refreshing view into how Aodren's respect for Lirra's skills, character, and strength is the foundation of his attraction to her. A good addition to a YA fantasy collection that readers will enjoy.

Clash of Kingdoms #3: Once a King written by Erin Summerill, reviewed by Carrie Conner
Summary: Lirra is a magic "channeler" who can summon the winds. Her father is a spymaster who escaped from the kingdom of Malam during their purge of channelers that cost his wife her life. He has tasked Lirra with delivering a secret message to the young King Aodren, who is trying to overcome his kingdom's history of intolerance with a show of strength at the upcoming Channeler's Jubilee at the All Kingdoms' Summit. A new substance called "channeler oil" is circulating with claims it can heal people. But is this mysterious substance legitimate or part of a dark conspiracy to turn people against channelers once and for all? Aodren needs Lirra's skills as both a spy and channeler to support his plans to restore his kingdom and heal it from the effects of the purge. While this fantasy, filled with action, intrigues, and romance, is sure to engage readers of the Clash of Kingdoms series, it can also stand alone as an independent story.
